I have had different brands of CD burners over the years and have found that the Sony brand offers consistent quality and performance. This was my third Sony CD/DVD drive. I've also had Memorex (good) and Lite-On (actually they offer technology that many brands use) in the past. I installed this on a six year old home made Pentium 4 system running at 2.66GHz and it works fine. I assume that older and less powerful processor systems in newer drives are suspect due to the processor and resource requirements (e.g. systems with a Pentium 3 processor). Regardless of brand, this should be considered when upgrading a component of older systems. However, I have no doubts or reservations about the Sony brand for most electronic components in general.
