Schlondorf is a somewhat underestimated champion. Khde often works with high-level literary scripts. Here he transforms Musil's novel into a gripping film. The subject here, the sadism of bullying in a boys' school, may not be to everyone's liking. Begin with his masterful coup de grce from Yourcenar. Many of his DVDs contain valuable interviews with him. His intellect, his charm, his humor - sovereign gifts - come to the fore.
