Review on 🐠 Optimized Marineland Magniflow Canister Filter for Easy Aquarium Maintenance by Rebecca Massey

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Great can so far.

I really wanted to like this filter because I know Marineland supports their product, but I've had too many problems with mine. I set it up correctly; No slack in hoses, hose straight to inlet, no air pockets near inlet filter, inlet hose clamp fits against rib on inlet assembly and is fully tightened. And I still had bubbles coming through the filter. I tilted the filter and gave it a little shake to shake out any bubbles and they continued to build up in large numbers after about an hour and I flushed and repeated the process for a week, always with a massive cloud of bubbles. Shooting from the return pipe. It got to the point where the impeller stopped for a moment as it cut through all the bubbles. I've tried taking it apart and checking all the seals, putting fresh silicone grease on all the o-rings etc and the same problem persisted. One day when I got home, I found that the filter was totally stuck, probably the air was clogged, the canister head felt very warm, so I unplugged it. Deflated, plugged back in and nothing. I let it sit for a couple of hours, plugged it in, and then it started working, releasing a big cloud of bubbles again. A few days later he started making faint rattling noises. So I took it apart again, examined the impeller and found that the shaft had broken in two. At that point I decided to just return it to Revain. Despite the problems, it filtered the water very well - the sponge and dental floss pad got very dirty after a short while and it was dead quiet in the closet. (until the impeller shaft broke.) I looked at other canisters from Fluval (bad bypass, bad CS and expensive) and Hydor (cheap plastic body, messier to maintain) but they all had their pros and cons and I went with them Point that Canister just wasn't worth the hassle for me. Canisters generally require more maintenance than their worth, IMO. I chose two Seachem Tidal 110 HOB filters. Cheaper and work just as well at filtering and easy to clean so I clean them weekly and they still have quite a bit of bio media in them. The best part is I never have to worry about them leaking, which is a "when" not an "if" with canisters. And I use the Marineland Magnum once a week to polish the water, it works great.
