Very strong chemical smell that won't go away

Advantages: The mat is thick, durable and beautiful material. Cons: The smell is very strong, similar to the chemical smell of VOCs or vinyl. I've had it for a year now and I thought it would clear up but it hasn't gone away so far. If I use it for more than half an hour, my throat hurts. I would not recommend that.
