Review on Enhance Your Navigation Experience with the 3D Connexion SpaceExplorer 3D Navigation Device (3DX-700026) by Kristen Moore

Ferrari from the periphery

This device is ONLY if you have extra money, not if you are on a budget (this is a luxury). It's too damn expensive, but once you do it. OH MY GOODNESS! Build quality is excellent, smooth movements, buttons, etc. I use this with 3Ds Max. If you don't have it, it takes a little longer to finish your work, but if you have it, it will be faster and nicer. This is NOT a mouse replacement, this is an add-on. MOST of what I use is selecting mesh faces or vertices while rotating an object, all Mouse + SpaceExplorer at the same time. You feel like you have an object in one hand while you choose the other. This works directly with your viewport. So if you have a window at the top, it will still rotate, pan, and zoom the view (you can't do this with just a mouse). Very useful if you have an array window at the top that has the "Show Preview" checkbox checked. VERSUS? only one, the pro I mentioned, is also AGAINST. For example, if you're browsing Google Chrome and working with 3ds max (not minimized) in the background and moving SpaceExplorer, the view or camera will move out of 3ds max! First make sure you have minimized 3ds max!

Pros
  • Intuitive 3D navigation
Cons
  • Little things
