I used this kit to repair a 7 year old Pacific Energy Alderlea T6 door seal. The instructions require that the channel in which the cable seal runs be bare metal. Not sure why this is needed as there was paint in the channel of the original door. However, I used a spoked wheel on a drill to remove any debris from the channel and then used 60 grit hand sandpaper to remove some of the paint. Remember this is wood stove paint on a very uneven cast iron surface - you won't get bare metal all over it unless you break the sandblaster. Using hand sanding I was able to clean the channel down to bare metal by about 10% or more. The sealer that comes with it isn't as thick as silicone - it's the equivalent of art paint you can buy in a tube. It's a little tricky to apply as you have to squeeze the tube as you move it. In any case, after filling the canal, I smoothed out the glue with my finger so that it filled the canal evenly without excessive protrusion. it made no difference. Adding ropes was easy, starting in the middle of the channel on the side of the loops. Type A graders will not like the connection as the ends of the rope will wear out immediately after cutting. However, the connection was acceptable. I advise you not to tighten the rope when inserting it into the channel. Instead, make sure the rope is slack as you push it into the channel with your finger. Otherwise you risk breaking it and pulling the rope in the corners. Be sure to take your time in the corners as the rope tends to pull towards the middle. After the installation was complete, I squeezed my finger around the entire perimeter. Then I removed everything else - there wasn't much to it, but I imagine it would be a mess if you allowed the channel to overflow. Then I closed the door to make sure it closes and fits snugly. It happened. Then I opened the door and gave her an hour as instructed. Then I closed the door. I started the fire 20 minutes ago with the door open (MAKE SURE YOU WATCH THE STOVE FOR SAFETY!) to keep it hot. I closed the door. Problem. A small amount of glue got on the "clean" side of the rope and stuck to the plate. darn. my fault The cable seal came loose a little at this point. Open the door, let it cool down, clean the canal in the affected area, reapply the glue, insert it manually, close the door, open it, let it harden. The result is good. The seal sits, holds and seals. I gave this kit 4 stars because the instructions could have been a bit more detailed. I'll update this if the fill doesn't last at least a few years. For those struggling I would say that preparation is key with this product - unless the channel is very clean and contains at least some bare metal it can fail. Also, the sealant needs to penetrate the rope - wet as suggested and once installed, gently push the rope all the way around while pressing with your finger.
