I'm just going to swallow my pride and admit that I've made just about every clumsy amateur mistake I could make. My bathroom still looks great. I hope you learn from my mistakes. Renovating a bathtub is not an easy task for do-it-yourselfers. The amount of prep work that goes into it is no joke. I probably spent 3 hours cleaning the tub, sanding it, removing sealant, and removing drains and fixtures. My tub was 40 years old so the tub drain was pretty stubborn to get out. Three trips to Home Depot and $80 later, I pulled an old, rusty drain out of the tub. I ended up having to buy a tub drain removal tool for $20. I only mention this because I had a couple of unexpected expenses that, if I had known upfront, I would have gladly paid a professional to sort them out. I got a great arm workout mixing heavy stuff in a bucket. I might even sweat. The product lays down nicely and evenly and with the help of a foam roller I was able to get an even layer. I did exactly what the videos taught me; at the edges, then in the middle, then on the outside. Pour over, drain product and discard excess material. At this point I feel like a real pro. There's no sticky slime anywhere except in the tub and I watch it flatten out. Proud of my accomplishments (and thirsty), I decide to grab a beer and use a beer bottle as a dam to keep the slime from going down the drain (mistake #1). Two hours later I came back to clean all the mucus out of the pipe. runoff that could accumulate there. Since I wasn't wearing gloves (mistake #2), I decided to lean against the top wall of the tub (mistake #3) and lean forward to pull the devil out. Immediately after dipping my hand in a pile of white sticky goo, I realized what I had done and angrily wiped my hands with soap. Did I mention this stuff is thick and gooey? Soap didn't seem to work - I decided I had to resort to chemicals so I went to the closet to find Goo Gone (leaved a trail of white goo on the handles - Mistake #4). After washing I was able to apply a little more solution with a roller and the stain was eventually smoothed out. After packing, I went back to remove the weir around the drain. The solution started to thicken quite a bit and it was difficult to pull the bottle out. I twisted, pulled and carefully removed the beer bottle. In doing so, I was able to remove the sealed drain cap (Error #5). The slime was stuck to the bottom of the bottle and to keep it from sliding down the drain I pulled the bottle out and twisted and turned trying to control the dripping of the slime. This resulted in the last few drops of beer falling squarely into the center of the tub (Mistake #6). With 2 problems in front of me and thinking of an explanation for my predicament as a plumber, I decide to focus on the white goo seeping into the tub. my first flush. I sprayed Goo Gone onto a paper towel and tried to wipe the excess goo off the drain threads first. I eventually got most of it and installed a brick dam with more duct tape. When I got to the drips in the center of the tub, only a few of them had drowned, but I was able to wipe away most with a damp paper towel. It wasn't until the next day that I realized I'd made mistake #7 β double-check the paper towels for dog hair before doing this. After 20 hours the solution had dried slightly and had hardened. There are few small artifacts of my handiwork in the style of the Three Stooges. Despite this, the bathroom looks better than before day and night. I was able to use a sanding pad and remove any hair that got into the tub. In short: - It was very easy for me to follow the video. - I find the product very high quality - The product is incredibly sticky; I would really appreciate a video on 'how to clean that crap' - My bathroom looks AMAZING for all the 'happy little accidents'.
