Great shoe but a bit annoying

(Edited 11/21/21) I bought these shoes because I like the way they look. The combo multicolor/magnet looks so cool, goes great with jeans or shorts. The leather is high quality and soft around the foot. I think the width of these boots is just right. (In comparison, Astir lace-ups felt uncomfortably tight in the same size.) They're very comfortable underfoot. I have medium + arches and the support feels just right. After a while I feel like my feet just relax and take the shape of the insole. The Fluidform process is pretty amazing. I don't see any blemishes where the upper meets the midsole (you know where the stitching used to be) and they look durable. They fit very comfortably, but only with modifications. Some issues for me: 1) I have to lace them very tight to enclose the heels which is a figurative pain. Piano strings that look like shoelaces literally make that pain. I, like poor Ringo, have blisters on my fingers from those laces. I say they are too skinny. When I manage to lock my heels in, the shoes are laced so tightly that the arch of my foot is crushed and the laces cut into the arch of my foot. The addition of a felt tongue pad alleviated that pain and also helped set the heel more firmly. Future versions of this shoe will benefit from more padding on the tongue. Thin shoelaces have to go! 2) The lace holes are not reinforced, they are just narrow holes cut into the suede to prevent thicker laces from easily tightening. I've been wearing them for about a month and the laces have already rubbed deep grooves on the skin. Reinforcement around the laces and reinforced lace holes would be nice additions. The lace-hole part of the shoe, whatever it's called, can be thicker. 3) heel slip. I usually wear a US size 8.5 to 9, my left foot is probably an 8.5 and my right foot is closer to a 9. Since there are no half sizes, a size 42 would work best. Heel blockage is with both Shoes a problem, but especially left. I added a cheap heel sticker (which covers the entire heel, not the "peanut" version). This, along with the tongue pads, keeps my heels in place. More padding around the ankle would have worked wonders, especially in the Achilles tendon area and lateral heel. A slightly more arched rear of the shoe to match the shape of the rearfoot would have aided in proper heel fit and prevented heel slip. I had to try a lot of mods (and medium socks) to get these to work, but in the end I'm glad I kept them. Ecco designers know how to influence my consumption gene, which somehow instilled in me a subconscious need to have these shoes. Dark magic is afoot, I'm telling you!

Pros
  • Contrasting textile tongue for sophisticated style
Cons
  • Easy repairability
