This Sony CD player was bought for my 96 year old father-in-law who will be using it to listen to audio books. The problem arose when I was trying to get a device that supports headphones for the hard of hearing, but still has normal sound for my 96-year-old mother-in-law, who has no hearing loss. All competing CD player boomboxes had the same problem: when headphones are plugged into the audio-out jack, the CD player's main speakers are disabled. The problem was solved with a $4 audio splitter, a pair of headphones and a pair of decent PC speakers so both could hear. Easily accessible + volume controls are used to increase headphone volume. PC speakers with on/off switch and volume control can then be turned down to achieve an acceptable sound level. The headphone volume did not change regardless of whether the connected PC speakers were on or off. The USB upstream port was also a valuable feature as their steel frame dwelling reduced the FM signal too much to hear the local classical music radio station as background music. With a USB port that reads MP3 files, I downloaded free classic MP3 music files onto a flash drive that now plays soothing music tracks non-stop when not listening to audiobooks. The only downside I found was the inability to amplify the FM radio signal, but recorded MP3 files played from a flash drive provided a good workaround. The last major feature was a top-loading CD player in the smallest package available. This Sony has very good sound from built in speakers in the smallest body I could find. The audio cassette player was not considered a useful feature. This device has it all. I would buy it again for myself and recommend it to others. The audio splitter, headphones and PC speakers shown in the photo are not included with this Sony product.
