Outdated but versatile

This review is for the SONY BDP S1700 Multi Region Bluray Player. I give it 4 stars for its flawless performance, about three months of use but I can't rate its streaming abilities because I haven't used it for that. It never refused to play DVD or Blu-ray from any region, but you have to choose A, B or C for Bluray regions. Very easy. The picture and sound quality is impressive but not the best for a 4K TV, this player doesn't have a 4K upscaling mechanism and my TV's upscaling is mediocre. By the way, I think all 1080p HD players are outdated. 4K is the new standard (for now, 8K will come in due course), but they can still be useful. DVDs look very good in this player, it has a great PALNTSC converter, but I'm seeing ghosting on some discs. What I really like This player can play CDs and DVDs in MP3 format. I have a bunch of classic radio series in these formats, Jack Benny, Life Of Riley, Goon Show etc. I have a SANYO FWBP807FP 4K player which can't find any readable files in these formats and the SONY displays are great! Very informative and user friendly. The comprehensive image search is perfect with no freezes or crashes. 1700 does everything I ask without a sustained PAUSE (II) character on screen, great for screenshots! So overall a very good player with impressive versatility, but not the best choice for 4K TVs. Look for a player with 4K upscaling, it costs a bit more. Stay away from overpriced multi-region 4K UHD players, they currently range from $350 to $500. 4K drives are region independent, you can easily buy a decent 4K player for under $100 and a multi-region 4K upscaler for $200. I'd rather have two players for the price of one anytime!
