I use Prismacolor pencils for my work on a daily basis and I'm tired that there doesn't seem to be a quality rotary sharpener that sharpens pencils accurately for fine detail. I've experimented with 4 different brands over the past few months.... The first (Derwent SuperPoint) gave the pencil a great point, but the gripping jaws had "shark teeth" which made the outside of the pencil look like one Beaver. gnaws at it. The sharpener also had a completely useless clip that moved in different directions inside the case. The same goes for the Swordfish 40100 sharpener and the UNI HK-20 sharpener. Neither had an auto shutoff that was, well, off. You had to twist a few turns, take out the pin and see what you got. Sharpeners #1, 2, 3. The fourth (CARL Angel-5 Royal) struck me as attractive because it had rubber sponges to hold the pencil. I reasoned that getting rid of the "teeth marks" on the outside of the pencil might be a good compromise if the tip was satisfactory. But as it turned out, that wasn't the case because the rubber jaws didn't hold the pencil, and when you twisted the sharpener, the pencil rotated in the jaws, removing wood unevenly. Review #4 I watched a U-Tube video of the Staedtler MARS 501 sharpener and paid particular attention to see if the Prismacolor pencil was spinning in the rubber jaws. Had not. I got my Steadtler last week and it's great! This is a German product, well designed and well finished. Rubber sponges have a strong spring that prevents the slightest twist of the pencil. When I compared the tip to a "Super Point" sharpener, the difference was barely noticeable. It has a true "auto-stop" mechanism that will NOT continue to eat your crayons. And the clip keeps the sharpener firmly on the table. The sharpening gear is made of high quality German steel, and the blade can be removed by removing a small clip... and ordering a replacement from Staedtler if needed. This is the BEST sharpener on the market for sharpening Prismacolor pencils.
