Very happy with this filter! My family lives in an area that should have good city water (Arlington, Virginia), but I bought this filter for additional insurance. I read Civil Action (a book about a community affected by polluted water, made into a film starring John Travolta) and was surprised to learn that people who become ill from polluted water often take most of their burden. . through the shower water. When you shower in hot water, your pores open up and 20 to 50+ gallons of water (and possibly pollutants) are poured onto your skin, which is very absorbent. For this reason, a whole-home filter can be more effective than a Brita filter (which filters about a gallon of water you drink per day). We chose this filter because it has two stages: (1) Sediment and (2). ) catalytic carbon filter. The first stage captures debris (including organic and inorganic substances such as "Disinfection By-Products" - see http://www.lenntech.com/processes/disinfection/byproducts/disinfection-by-products.htm). The second stage cleans your water by removing chloramines, chlorine, chemicals, etc. From what I understand, chloramines kill organics and are good for the water system, but can cause chronic skin irritation (which isn't surprising since most of the time you're showering with chemicals designed to destroy organic matter) and can create decontamination byproducts. Installation was relatively easy (the plumber charged us $250 when we paid him $400, but that's another story) and our water seems cleaner and fresher afterwards. We used to have a slight odor (probably chlorine and possibly chloramines) that we no longer have. Remember that I am not a scientist but an ordinary citizen. Good luck finding the right filter!
