I had the exact same experience as "Mark"; The drive came in the product packaging (small cardboard box as shown in the photos) with no additional packaging or protection, just an address label. In fact, it wasn't even sealed with tape, simply relying on the friction of the cardboard to keep it closed. When the box was opened, there was no cushioning inside, leaving the drive dangling in the box and taking the full brunt of the impact during shipping. Perhaps unsurprisingly, when I plugged in the drive it would power up and open the drawer, accepting the drive but just making various grinding noises when closing. Also, while watching the events while plugging in the USB cable, there was no mention at all of connecting a new USB device, not even the main event related to the plug-in. This was consistent on both MacOS (via a console application) and Intel-based Ubuntu Linux (via browsing /var/log/syslog). Shipping methods, or maybe it's a used (dead) drive masquerading as new, or just a crappy drive from the start. Either way, it's a waste of money.
