I've had 550's on my car for a few months now and during that time I really haven't seen the need for clear shields. . I've never ridden tracks that made me feel uncomfortable if I just dumped the OME's white stone shields and worried about damaging my headlights. Then I drove halfway across the state and turned on the Rock Shields (it was daytime) so I didn't really think I'd need fog lights. Then, according to Murphy's Law, I encountered some pretty violent thunderstorms that nearly plunged the sky into darkness. That's when I realized the real need for clean stone shields to ensure the lights weren't damaged by debris and to be able to turn the lights on when needed. The shields turn on the lights perfectly, it only took about 30 seconds to turn on both. As for taking them off, I haven't had to do that yet, but I see no point in taking them off now unless there's something between the cap and the lens. I think it's definitely necessary. Yes if you have 550s on your car!
