Bluetooth transmits and receives. I bought this to transfer from my mp3 player to bluetooth headphones. However, it requires a power source while transmitting. There is no internal battery. So if you're streaming from a computer, that's great. But I was trying to stream from my MP3 which wasn't powering the device. I was able to hook up a battery to it which would power it while plugged into an MP3 player. Not all batteries support its performance. I have 2 different batteries. One will always turn it on, the other won't.
