I use these lamps for growing plants. I can say they work because my Aloe Jet has grown huge since I bought it and tends to grow towards the light. I bought them about a year ago and haven't had to change my first lightbulb yet. I leave the light on almost 20 hours a day so I'm really impressed with how long it lasts. It's also worth noting that they get pretty hot. It's not actually hot enough to start a fire or pose a safety hazard, but if you're using it on plants, be careful not to touch the leaves or they'll likely dry out and shrivel. I haven't had these issues with my plants, so just keep them at a reasonable distance.
