I have some Havanese. He was 4 months old when I got home. I taught him how to use it even though I'm home all day. We have very bad winters, so it worked out really well. If you are consistent you should have no problem teaching your pup to do this. Although we have a large garden, it's very convenient when he goes about his business indoors - I no longer have to brave the weather and neither does my dog. I actually bought two so while one was being washed the other was available. As for the odor, I soak the "weed" in bleach overnight and then use a pet odor remover. It removes the smell of urine. Overall I am very satisfied with the product.
