You simply connect it to your aquarium and it slowly regulates the temperature to the desired value. It has an adjustment knob on the cord and a digital display on the heater itself that you can see as you set the temperature. It has a light sensor that lets you know when it's reached your desired temperature, and it works pretty quickly, all things considered. It's a decent size, not too big or too small, but has a medium-sized heater. worked well for what we needed it for.
