The diagram does not adequately describe how to mount the clamp. You need to completely unscrew the knurled knob, slip it over the ball, insert the ball into the hole, and then tighten the knurled knob. The clip doesn't put enough pressure on the sides of my iPhone 8 to prevent it from slipping out easily. I couldn't find anything on the dash of my Toyota Camry to attach a zip tie to, so I just stuck it in my cup holder. It seems to support the phone at an angle that I can see while driving and using the Maps app.
