Review on Enhanced Audio Experience with Ear Force DSS 7.1 Channel Dolby Surround Sound Processor by Jorge Maertz

best not to connect directly to tv

I originally planned to connect it directly to the tv so I don't have to keep switching optical cables between PS3 and Xbox360 which both are via HDMI with my TV connected. The problem is that while DSS only gives you Dolby Pro Logic IIx, which is certainly an improvement, it's not the 7.1 surround sound you're really paying for. So my solution was to get an extra optical cable (so I plugged it into each console), keep the ends of the connection within reach, and just plug the end of the console I want to play on into DSS (best for people whose consoles are hidden in the entertainment block and difficult to access, just like me). I put the USB in my cable box - it plugs into any USB for power, which is nice. It might be possible to hook it up to some TVs and get 7.1, but I don't know how you'll know until you try (I have a Sony Bravia KDL-46XBR4). Because of this, I would really like DSS to have 2 optical inputs, and there is only one. Also, Turtle Beach could explain better that you only get Pro Logic if you plan to hook it up to your TV. had at home. I have paired the DSS with my PS3 Ear Force PX21 gaming headset as it works with every system I know of and apart from the inconveniences described above I am quite happy with it. In terms of cost, this is a fairly affordable setup for the sound quality you get - I paid $50 for the DSS and $65 for the PX21. So overall I'm very happy, but a second optical input would make a huge difference for me and I think Turtle Beach should have made it clearer that you can't connect to a TV and given 7.1 - 2 reasons why it's not Case is got 5 stars. UPDATE: I just received a Nyrius SW100 Digital Audio Optical Toslink 3 input selector compatible with fiber optic, HDTV, Blu-ray DVD player, PCM, Dolby Digital, DTS, XBOX360, PS3 and more. Everything seems to work with DSS so far - I used the 3rd input to connect the PS2. Something to think about if you're like me.

Pros
  • Digital optical and analog stereo inputs
Cons
  • Something else
