It worked! I get very annoyed with car manufacturers (Volkswagen in this case) who build their cars based on some obscure tools that no one else has. So naturally, after some fiddling trying to remove the car stereo (actually I had to move it out of the way to get to the AC wires) I finally turned to YouTube to find out how to do it. I was surprised to learn that I needed these special "radio removal tools" (two were needed to pull out the VW Passat radio - one for each side). Why couldn't VW develop a "latch" with a regular screwdriver? It's to deter thieves I suspect - pretty funny looking at a 15 year old car radio, but probably relevant when the car was first launched. However, as soon as I inserted these special tools into the car radio's slots, it popped out immediately.
