Canon printers have an estimated lifespan of 2 years before a "critical hardware problem" (as Canon support called it) occurs. This is the second Canon printer to suddenly fail without rough handling or poor operating conditions. The printer has been stored in a dust-free, climate-controlled environment and has been cleaned and maintained as recommended in the manual. The printer was using ink as if it were being used to generate the electricity needed to run the printer, but was otherwise working fine until this afternoon when error 1403 popped up on the display, which presumably means someone came to my house and my printhead replaced by another model. This error also prevents the scanner from being used. Canon let me do the monkey dance and apologized but the entire unit would need to be replaced. It will not be replaced by another Canon.
