Fully used liquid starch works best for stiffening crocheted cotton doilies.
This starch has no lumps, so washed lace doilies are dipped in it and wrung out, then dried and moistened ("sprinkled"), wrapped in a damp cloth and left in a plastic bag overnight, they are ironed and remain perfectly flat for several months. They may be dated, but they definitely dress up my dining room sideboard and remind me of my mom who would always work on her "embroidery" when she had a minute.
