Variable speed is something I've never seen in a mixer, immersion or anything else. It is great. The product is advertised as "dishwasher safe". For real? As? The blade will not detach from the hollow shaft and the shaft will not detach from the plastic cone that secures it to the motor housing. I put it in the dishwasher with a plastic bag attached to a plastic cone. However, the blade guard and shaft are two separate pieces of metal and do not appear to have been welded or sealed in any way. The bottom line is that even if I run it in the dishwasher, I have no way of knowing there's no material or water in that chute. Why does the ad say "dishwasher safe"? Why did other reviewers say they put "it" in the dishwasher? What do you mean? I also don't like that the blade guard is so wide. It doesn't fit in many of the containers I bought it for (mainly glasses, cups and mugs). The containers it fits in have a guard that's wider than the bottom of the jar, and the sides are curved so I can't stick the tool in the container, ask for a different ingredient, and come back because it won . don't get up This makes it difficult to use. So, variable speed and price aside, my Cuisinart hand blender is still better. It has a narrow blade guard to allow it to stand alone in a narrow container, and the stock and blade guard are a single metal tube. I can only put it in the dishwasher with a plastic lid, but at least I'm more confident there's no water or mold in the shaft.
