Review on IoSafe Solo G3 3TB: Fireproof & Waterproof External Hard Drive in Pewter Gray - SK3TB by Sean Garrison

Revainrating 5 out of 5

My second iOSSafe for many years

This appears to be a reliable general purpose drive. I waited a bit to check it out. I bought it to replace another iOS drive, the "local storage" I bought years ago and has proved a champion. the old one still blows almost silently, but also almost at full power. That's the only reason I bought a new one. I switched computers three times and the original drive is still my copy of D/R "Local/In-Place". The new version is more than twice as fast (partly because of USB3, but also because of the speed of the drive itself) and also twice the size (3.0 TB instead of 1.5 TB for the old one). I only use this drive for my photo shoots. I shoot a lot with DSLRs, which produce the largest files for personal and commercial assignments and portfolios. My workflow (if it helps) is as follows: - I boot the card(s) into my computer - My /w edit automatically copies the images once to the library (a separate pair of 16TB RAID 10 drives installed locally connected to Thunderbolt) and another copy once on this "fireproof" and "waterproof" device (please check the specs for actual ratings, basically so many degrees for so many hours and full immersion in so many feet of water for so many - then hours). After selecting the images I like, I edit them and they are copied to the same RAID 10 library disks. A selection of the edited images are also uploaded to my website where they are re-archived and backed up to remote servers. The newer 3.0TB model had an integrated fan, which I found to be as quiet as possible, but this particular model DOES NOT include a fan. iOSsafe has other models but not in this configuration/connection type. I want them to do it. I use Mac and this format works best for me. Therefore only 4 stars. If history is any indication, I'll be looking for another drive in a few years when this one fills up (I must be so lucky!). Sometimes I long for the days when all you needed to do was store your negatives in a safe place (be it a shoebox or a bank vault), but that longing only lasts a few seconds. I do NOT miss the hours in the darkroom. Now I can do a lot more from the comfort of my studio, which leaves me more time for the creative part.

Pros
  • Everything is fine!
Cons
  • Dull Hardware
