I love "fried pie" donuts and this donut maker is amazing and makes the best fried pie donuts, 4 at a time, for family fun and a snack. I tried all the recipes, everything turned out perfectly, without bitterness and extraneous smells. We really like the buttermilk chocolate recipe. For buttermilk, I use canned condensed milk and white vinegar. I always keep evaporated milk on a pantry shelf because we don't use milk regularly, and when I need it I take it off me and mix it with water according to the directions on the jar. I use a full tablespoon of baking powder, but I mix and sift the dry ingredients to combine well before adding the wet ingredients. We add 1 teaspoon of coffee extract to the chocolate recipe to bring out the flavor of the chocolate. We also add 2 teaspoons ground cayenne pepper and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon to the chocolate recipe to make Aztec Devils Food Fried Cakes. To make them easy to glaze, we just use store-bought icing. To prepare the frosting, simply heat the white frosting in the microwave so it melts and dip each donut in, then onto the wire rack to drain, but everyone seems to like the frosting straight out of the container, brushed with sprinkles or Jimmy or crushed peanut. These are not fried fluffy yeast donuts that you fill with jelly or Bavarian cream. It's fried cakes: the baked, sweet donut-like cakes you see in Mistress' donut powder box, but they're fresher and even tastier than Mistress! If your child enjoys baking, that's great, but I would recommend that a parent remove the baked donuts from the machine so the child doesn't burn their fingers. Next weekend we're trying store-bought Jiffy Cornbread Box mix and making corn tortillas, and when they show up we'll use them on our holiday table along with the cranberry buns we've already made with Jiffy Cornbread Mix. We've frozen some to see if they thaw well and they did, but we always eat them and we never have any left over to freeze.
