If you still have an old analog TV that you want to use, you can either buy a cable TV or such a converter. A lot of people have been doing these things since the transition to analog/digital TV. But it's been a few years now and most people have either switched to HDTV or already have one. As a result, not many people make these very simple converters anymore, and at the moment there seem to be two main versions. This is one or one of many different clones with different names, but they all seem to use the same fairly sketchy software and hardware. If you look closely at them, you can say that they are all the same because they share the same interface. First I tried one of the schematic boxes - they all allow you to plug in a USB drive to record the show. Basically look for a front or back USB port and they're all the same. Like many other people, I had problems with what I bought and ended up sending it back. So I got this one instead. It doesn't have a built-in voice recorder, but everything else seems much better. The instructions are better, the user interface is better designed and simpler, and it comes with a universal remote control. I hooked up one of those indoor HDTV antennas and it seems to be picking up local stations in my area quite well. I also have an HDTV with a built in tuner and with a similar antenna it picked up a few more channels but I got all I expected from this box. I'm going to get another one, bring another old TV back to life that I have. If you don't need a cable, don't pay for it.
