Review on Premium Stainless Steel Julienne Peeler by Kuhn Rikon - Includes Blade Protector and Durable Handle by Tim Arnold

Revainrating 4 out of 5

angel hair! at Utensils & Gadgets

Because I love zoodles (as well as carrots, parsnips, zucchini and sweet potato pasta) I ordered ALL of the highly rated Revain Julienne peelers/slicers to compare. The Paderno World Cuisine three blade vegetable cutter for slicing vegetables Paderno World Cuisine A4982799 with a three blade plastic spiral for vegetables has failed and was immediately returned. He mutilated zucchini, made clumsy, misshapen threads instead of noodles, and staggered about. Suction cup feet were a joke. The carrots I tried were never cut into strips but left in thick strips. (Yes, I had a julienne blade!) And after cutting, the teeth curved in all directions! I can only assume that the one the reviewer bought and raved over 3 years ago is from another vendor. This happens all the time. Businesses change suppliers for one reason or another, and the quality drops. Maybe the "good" recent reviews refer to machines that were made 3 years ago and just found in the attic? I also tested the Gefu Spirelli GEFU Spirelli Spiralizer. It was about as disappointing as Paderno and was immediately brought back. Read some 1 or 2 star reviews to see why it was bad. Never really worked! Very smart. I wonder if anyone actually tests these things before they are produced! I bought an OXO Good Grips Julienne Peeler a few months ago and have been happily using it for about 4 meals when I noticed the blades (teeth) used to cut food. were all bent at different angles! The blade didn't seem all that sharp, and it was quite difficult to slide across carrots or parsnips. However, it had the widest teeth at 3.7mm, which made nice thick chisels. I then compared Kuhn Rikon Kuhn Rikon Julienne Peeling Knife with Guard Blade, Stainless Steel Handle and MIU France MIU France Stainless Steel Swiss Peeler, Julienne Blade Knives. Both worked very well for hand tools. (Remember to secure the base of the veg with a slicer or large fork, as one reviewer noted, so you don't cut your fingers holding the veg.) The MIU worked great, was easy to use, but the relatively short handle made it harder for me to hold on to. It doesn't come with a blade guard, but I made one out of a 1/2"diameter 3" clear plastic tube with a slit down the long side. The teeth are 3.3mm apart, making the pasta as thin as spaghetti but thicker than angel hair. The Kuhn Rikon has a nice long handle which I love and a cap for a VERY sharp blade. The teeth were only 2.2mm apart, making them look like pasta with angel hair instead of spaghetti. Suitable for root vegetables such as carrots, parsnips and sweet potatoes; they cook faster. I hope this helps anyone wading through Julienne Peeler Swamp!
