Review on πŸ”¬ Advanced 1.5lb Mold Making Material for Precision Molds by Kristen Reid

2 moulds, 2 mistakes

I used to use alginate (not that brand) with great success but it became a nightmare. I bought this because it was enough for me to make two molds in case the first one broke, but in the end both molds were useless. The first time I used it, I followed the directions on the box (including using bottled water) and mixed it as thoroughly as I could with a paint mixer during work time. This left a few dry, grape-sized chunks next to the piece I made the cast from. When I took the part out of the mold the powder crumbled leaving voids next to the cavity. When I decided it was just user error I decided Using one of my child's toy colanders to ensure the alginate is 100% lump free. I started. After reading the reviews here and a few other sites I decided to mix it by hand to feel the clumps and try to break them up while mixing. Even with the sifted alginate, it formed so many clumps when I mixed it with water that by the time I spent trying to mix it by hand it started to set and I never managed to get it pour out, and ended up having a mold mine. I'm not sure I got a bad batch of this stuff, but it hardens too quickly to mix properly. I think if you're really lucky and you're next to the part you're making the mold from, If there are no lumps, you'll never know there's a problem. I opened both molds after they had set, and the first was riddled with lumps of various sizes; The second one only had a few raisin sized chunks (which was great) but with such a quick turnaround time I just can't bring myself to rate it more than 1 star. It was a waste of money.

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
