Very soft material. I like that the pieces are easily stored in a zippered section. The board doesn't lay flat because the material is so soft and it wrapped around itself, I usually weigh it down on one side as you can see. I personally only use the checker / chess board and pieces so I roll it with that board facing out. It seems to work a little better. It comes with a black bag to store the game board in. The pieces are plain on one side for checkers and have the chess design on the opposite side. All in all it works well for my family.
