Upon delivery, I immediately saw what the review was about. I believe it's the polishing in the polishing process that makes these shakers so great. I took 99% alcohol and rinsed both thoroughly and continued washing with soap and water. These shakers belong in the kitchen! I recommend cleaning them well before filling.
