The originals broke within a decade
Our kids are just used to using the rubber bands to get the bottom panels out of the way. I don't think our youngest even remembered the latches working. And for less than $20 and a few minutes I had them replaced! Please note that it was beyond my strength to pull out the old ones without breaking them. Make sure you install them on the first try! It was also a little difficult to get them to snap into place during installation. It was easier to snap them into place when I undid the clasp.
