I chose this nutcracker over the cheaper Duke version because the Duke comment said the threaded shank couldn't be adjusted far enough for small nuts. Although this one costs twice as much, the picture correctly shows that the barrel is longer and reversible for different nut sizes. It can be used on almost any nut, large or small, and is strong enough for most. It still has some flexibility when cracking hard nuts and I wouldn't dare try black walnut or hickory on it because it's not hard enough - very few. But it works wonders for my smaller shaggy hickory, who has completely bent my traditional hand-held nutcracker beyond recognition. Softer edible nuts (English walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, etc.) are certainly no problem for this nutcracker. But be prepared to pay more if you want something really professional that can handle black walnuts or that will last for generations. My unit also came with the base parts painted but not chromed as shown in the picture, but I don't mind that. .
