I ended up bending a piece of metal in my laptop to have it release when I used excessive force to yank the cable out. I put my WiFi router across a large room to make it central to the house. The cable modem has an unmanaged switch sitting next it it, and I ran its WAN cable to the router, and LAN cable back to the switch. Our residence hall was wired in ethernet 5e, but jacks are only inside the rooms, not in open areas. This is an older building with lots of brick inside and out. In order to relocate a router, I needed to extend an ethernet cable over a drop ceiling, through two interior walls, and back out into the open space. I had to track down some cabling in my network that was acting as a choke point throttling my connections to 100mbps speeds. I replaced the older cables with these and everything's back up to 1000mbps. The connectors clicked in as expected, and everything feels solid. You can't really beat it for the price. I don't know if they'll handle anything higher than GigE speeds, since I don't have that kind of network equipment at the house.
