lemon maybe? He only worked five months.

I have just ordered my second unit in five months. I really hope the first one was just a lemon. The first turned the bulbs black at both ends and burned them overnight. My rating may change depending on the characteristics of the new device.

Pros
  • Very fast delivery
Cons
  • Upgradeable

Short life, best aquarium lighting

Although they work as advertised they only last about two years. In the 10 years that I have owned an aquarium I have replaced it about five times. Once burned out, they cannot be repaired (the bulb can be replaced, but the internal defect cannot be repaired). I have tried products from other manufacturers but they did not fit properly in my all glass aquarium. This is either a design flaw that will require you to buy a new lantern every two years, or simply poor production.

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Almost never

The second one ordered didn't work at all

I ordered one of these in August and it died 2 months later. It lasted so long that I couldn't return it. Stupidly ordered a second one that didn't work at all. Unfortunately they seem to be the only vendor with an old school 30" lens hood, so I'm now using my 30 year old 10 gallon tank hood which lights up well but doesn't look as good. I wish aqueon would care more about the quality of their products as there don't seem to be any viable alternatives.

Pros
  • Handsfree
Cons
  • Not the best

Good light, but lifespan may be short.

The light works very well. But reliability can be an issue. This is my third light. My previous one lasted about a year. Water is easily exposed to light. Wet all the time. Perhaps this is the reason for the short lifespan. Unfortunately, I cannot find any other brands that offer similar lamps. I've tried LED lighting. The color of the fish looks weird and doesn't help the plants. I switch back to neon light. Update: It's been a little less than a year and the light no longer works. This is myโ€ฆ

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • No

Broken for aquarium lighting

The lens hood and the light itself will work. The light turns on. BUT, and this is not the fault of the manufacturer, but the fault of the transport organization. The body of the flashlight is completely detached from the plastic mounts. Must stick. The hood itself was torn on one side. We'll fix it again. I've been waiting a damn long time for this to arrive so I'm not posting back as my current hood, which I've had for probably 8 years, just gave up. Well, I really don't want to go anotherโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • I won't say anything

Quality issues Suitable for fish and aquatic life

My original flashlight lasted many years and then finally stopped working. I've read that the simple solution is to replace the ballast. I ordered one from Revain and the light came back to life. A year later, the device became very dark. It may be a lightbulb, but I decided to replace the lamp. Box opened, light works. The only problem is that the reflective cap fell out inside the plastic case. Upon inspection, all of the plastic areas where the mounting screws attach the cover to the chassis

Pros
  • Few competitors
Cons
  • Unsafe

It seems the quality issues are real.

The one that came with my aquarium has held up. 2 years? Maybe 3? And then the ballast slowly failed, leading me to believe it was an incandescent bulb. Got a spare bulb, nada. I ordered a new hood. Now, a little over a year later, it has failed again, or at least I assume so, because while I may have had to find time to replace my lightbulb, there's no way it should have failed *completely* (no sign of it, that it's powered, never seen a power outage, just a day without a fire) in just a year.

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • Minor issues
