Windows only uses half of the cores.

This is a great processor that can handle almost anything you have to offer. But windows has a problem when it only uses half the cores but linux works great but make sure you have a good cooler if you use it for linux due to its increase it gets hotter than windows.

Ideal for creating ZoneMinder:

Ideal for creating a ZoneMinder server with 12 POE IP cameras running Debian. The only downside is that back then the choice of mainboards for server purposes was limited. I've had to settle for a boring, flashy gaming motherboard paired with this 24-core processor. I'll probably later replace the motherboard with the best options on the market.

Absolute insane performance for the price.

Bought this 2970X to upgrade my home server from 1920X. This was an upgrade from an Aorus Extreme X399 with a 64GB Gskill Flare X. This system serves as my home theater library and also houses some gaming servers. I had absolutely no problems with stability or thermals. Also note that I'm cooling this in a 4U server case with a Noctua NH-U9 Threadripper cooler!

Easiest Installation

I have been building computer systems for 30 years. The Tr4 jack has got to be the easiest setup I've ever tried. This is the most professional outlet in the consumer space - adding water or an air cooler is a breeze, no compression, no hassle, just snap on and fold - a dream to install. In terms of CPU I learn from my VCP* (VMware Certified Professional) and with 24 cores I can easily host an entire virtualized data center running under a VMware workstation – all at once. 24 cores, 48 threads…

do you feel the power

I just finished my build but was only able to run some basic benchmarks and benchmarks including some compute intensive applications (DAZ and BOINC). This processor is so fast and powerful that even if DAZ is presented with >4000 CUDA cores (RTX 2080 Ti) and given the choice, only the CPU is used. (Manual benchmarking in DAZ shows that CPU-only and GPU-only are almost identical, and using a combination of CPU and GPU is only marginally faster (3%). BOINC takes several days to average the…

Replaced it with a 1st gen Threadripper - everything went great!

I have an Asus Prime X399-A motherboard on which I originally installed AMD Threadripper Gen 1. I've found that Windows 11 doesn't run on AMD Threadripper Gen 1 (and I didn't want to mess around with any workarounds someone smarter than me came up with!). I had all the hardware I needed, so I decided to upgrade to a Gen 2 Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX processor. Revain offered the lowest price so I accepted. Replacing processors is very easy and went smoothly. I pressed the power button, waited for

Okay but use 2950 except for niche cases

2970 Threadripper actually has 24 cores producing 48 threads. I switched it to my main PC by moving my old 2950 processor (16 cores, 32 threads) to my media server/NAS. In my experience with the 2970 I haven't found any improvement throughout the 2950 EXCEPT for very specific use cases for practical reasons. The 2970 is clocked the same in the 2950 and in most applications, just doesn't know what to do with 48 threads/24 cores to this day, and the CPU remains underutilized in most applications.
