Good hole, bad hole position; terrible flange!

The punch side of the tool punctured at 80psi. inches, but the allowable offset for the hole is too close to the edge of the metal plate. The flanged side of the tool will not form a flange at all, even after multiple cycles in the same location on the metal plate and at the maximum air setting (80-120 psi).

Pros
  • Each push of the lever delivers a single strike or flange crimp with precise control.
Cons
  • No Instructions

My only complaint with this tool is that on older cars with heavier gauge steel the flange is a bit flat. I got around this by tapering the metal of the flange and mating piece with a grinder and grinder. The tool is probably good for new car models with thinner sheet metal and worked great when working. It would be great to have such a tool with adjustable sheet thickness.

Pros
  • Forms an offset scalloped edge on sheet metal for seamless welding
Cons
  • For old

Almost as expected

Astro doesn't advertise the flange offset but I found another seller who claims it is .042" which is 19 gauge like on older cars. Exactly what I was hoping for. As it turned out, the offset was more like 20 gauge or 0.037 inches, maybe less. I haven't tried 1/4" air hose because they say at least 3/8". With this size and 100psi pressure, punching through an 18 gauge tool was no problem. It seems that flanking is best done with two shots. Maybe scrolling to 120psi would help. It leaves small…

Pros
  • Easy replacement stamp
Cons
  • Senior

So far, so good. in Body Repair Tools

This version of the Astro Punch appears to have been improved. We use them in our shop in small production batches. We burned 2 models of the previous generation. They just stop beating. My guess is that the cutters need replacing, which is supposedly easy and affordable, which is utter bullshit. You will need special metric tools to remove the inner air cylinder. If you find cutters, you can only replace the side that attaches to the black outer end. So we just buy new ones. I gave 4 stars…

Pros
  • Cuts metal production time in half
Cons
  • Quality
