Terrible router purchased from Linksys WRT54GL

Glad to see I'm not the only poor guy tormented by this cheap piece of router junk. This is by far one of the worst routers I have ever used. It won't do anything. It can't stream HD content without disconnecting, so I have to unplug and plug it back in. I flashed the firmware with an update, but that didn't fix the disconnecting issue.

Pros
  • Free for educational purposes
Cons
  • Piggy bank price

Download stops for no reason

This router is fine if you're just browsing the web, but if you're trying to stream videos via YouTube, or download something larger than a few megabytes, or play online games play, the router will disconnect and the download will stop. This becomes a big problem with simple computer maintenance like Windows updates. Buy another router.

Pros
  • Great variety
Cons
  • Some bugs

It wasn't stable

In the 6 months or so I've been using it it hasn't been stable. I often have performance issues that are resolved by disconnecting and reconnecting. I've used a few other wireless routers without these issues, so I have to assume this router is the source of the problem. These problems appear to be exacerbated by exposure. If several people in the house use it, even the lag is not constant. I would not recommend that.

Pros
  • Very good value for money
Cons
  • Obsolete model

Very good item in the router category

Bought my first one as an impulse buy. I've had no luck with a couple of my newest Linksys routers (they kept crashing and had to be cycled) so I tried the 'bought' Ativa brand thinking it couldn't be worse, but could be better. It was. It's been running for months without crashing (hasn't crashed yet) or had any other problems. It also supports what I need to work (like AES and Radius authentication). So I bought a pair for work. They were also reliable, but at work I also had the opportunity…

Pros
  • Pleasing
Cons
  • I have nothing to fault with it, everything is fine

Tech Support That Really Works

I just finished setting up the router so can't comment on its wireless capabilities yet (hence the 4 rating). However, I can say that I had trouble setting up my router, but the 24/7 tech support was surprisingly helpful. My experience with tech support is that at the end I tell them what to do. Even though this guy just finished the script, he must have been good. He eventually diagnosed that my router needed the same MAC address as my Mac. So while I can't comment on the quality of the…

Pros
  • Impressive
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options

Unreliable. in networking products

It dies when you do something that requires a lot of different ports, I think it has to do with the cheap chipset used. There is practically no support. The firmware is a bit messed up and I couldn't enable UPnP initially, even after updating the firmware. From time to time the wireless internet connection disappears and it has to be turned off. Works about 70-80% of the time with no problems.

Pros
  • It's amazing
Cons
  • boring packaging

My experience with this router has been hell. It didn't initially set up - after 3 calls to India I was told they had found a problem with the router and 2 hours later we were finally up and running. But a day later, other problems arose, and the same training followed - called India several times, in the end it was fixed. I can count 5 different cases where something went wrong and was subsequently "fixed". But every time they solved a problem, the result was different. somewhat functional but

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons

Bandwidth Blackhole is good for computers and accessories

So we installed a wireless router and started using it. After a while I noticed that the pages take 10-15 minutes to load and no download can be completed. I thought I had a virus as my computer has 2.5 gigabytes of RAM and 500 GHz ROM and there are almost no programs that can make my computer run slow. I ended up erasing my drive and just reinstalling your main windows and Microsoft. And the problem persisted. I tried everything I could think of and then gave up and got tested. Everything was…
