Sanding sponges are a great tool when done right; it's not like this. I took the 80 grit sponge from that pack and lathed a section of the part I had just sanded with an 80 grit Abranet leaving huge scratches and gouges - I had to go back to the kerf to remove them . This set of 10 sanding blocks from Boshcraft is a good grit for most woodwork. I don't work with metal much so I can't comment on their use on metal. I've been using sponge sanding blocks for decades. While not suited to fine machining, they are fine for most other tasks. Sponge sanders come in particularly handy when sanding anything other than a perfectly flat surface.
