Description of 🦐 FlorinVolcanit Rio Escuro-F: Premium Black Volcanic Ash Substrate for Freshwater Shrimp by Brightwell Aquatics

Ideal for use as a substrate in shrimp biotope aquaria 3mm particle substrate. Natural volcanic ash with beneficial properties for aquatic plant growth and long-term care of fishes and motile invertebrates requiring slightly-acidic low-GH water conditions. Binds elements that contribute to hardness lowering general hardness and resulting in a slight acidification of alkaline water to a pH of less than 7. Used as a primary substrate forms the basis of a stable growth medium for rooted aquatic plants by permitting development of strong root systems encouraging nutrient-uptake through roots and allowing roots to remain sufficiently oxygenated.

Looks great.: Fish and aquatic animals

So far I am satisfied with the product. I would really like to get a smaller grit for small root plants with thin roots. The color is beautiful. I didn't have to flush. It didn't make my tank cloudy or dirty. I even had to pour a little more into my tank full of water to deepen the substrate and it was ok. This tank will be dedicated to shrimp and plants using remineralized reverse osmosis water.

Pros
  • Absolute legend
Cons
  • Not sure

Really good substrate

Used for a 5.5 gallon nano tank and so far so good. Didn't pollute the water. Although it's been in the tank for 3 weeks now, it hasn't lowered my pH at all. It's easy to plant, but sometimes the roots can sprout easily I think because the particles are bigger. However the color is dark brown instead of black and it stands out but I really like it. All in all I would definitely buy it again.

Pros
  • Everything great!
Cons
  • Low maintainability

Does not buffer pH in fish and aquatic animals

Very disappointed as I heard a lot of good things about this company and decided to give it a try for the first time. I bought this to create a new aquarium for my Crystal Red Shrimp. I used to use an entire 5 pound bag for a 10 gallon tank and after a few weeks and almost a month the pH is now 6.8. Crystal red shrimp thrive at a pH of 6.1-6.5 and most buffer substrates such as river bed and Ada-Aquasoil do well at the lower end of this range. I'm not sure if I got a bad batch or not but I made

Pros
  • Great for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Some difficulties

Bad batch after bad batch, garbage

I had so many problems with this earth. I bought a few months ago for 10 liters. On the first batch I filled the tank and started adding plants and the soil just started turning to dust when I touched it. Sent back and received another bag, second bag was fine. Well, I bought a huge bag for a new set of tanks. I checked a few and everything seemed fine. Pour it into my aquariums and I will find that 2 different colors are mixed. strange. So I filled up my tanks and sure enough, another bad…

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Bad instructions

Good substrate for plants but color is inaccurate

Definitely not black in colour. In the second picture you can see the river layer in the aquarium next to it. I'm not too mad about it as it will be heavily planted, but I deducted a star anyway because the packaging clearly says 'black'. It also looked black in the bag. This is a 10 gallon aquarium and I used 1 bag on 2 small black sandbags which I bought very cheap at the pet store. I know how to fill the aquarium properly. I put a plastic bag on the substrate and filled it with the siphon…

Pros
  • Good marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options
