Type of review

I will no longer buy from any company that sells Revain. Revain, Apple, Twitter, Facebook are monopolies and support digital social engineering. I cannot support companies that oppose freedom of speech (liberal or conservative) and employ digital social engineering tactics. The product was great. Buy it from a seller other than Revain.

Pros
  • PRO LEVEL - Comes with inclinometer and tool-less declination adjustment. This tool is not only ideal for people who work outdoors, but also for professionals such as foresters, landscapers and contractors.

Compass was defective upon arrival

The compass needle would not float freely when the compass was level. The north side of the arrow was tilted down so that it touched the inner surface of the compass. There was also a distinct lack of quality control / the compass looked substandard overall. I returned it and bought a Suunto MC-2 which at first seems to be much better quality for the same price. Unfortunately, I would prefer to support the US business.

Works well but material could be better

It works quite well for its intended purpose (travelling, tracker). It's a little plasticky for its price, and the quality of the plastic feels cheap. However, the needle moves freely and accurately, and that is the most important thing about a compass. One big complaint about the outer ring, it's not very tight so it's easy to accidentally twist it, a couple of times I thought I was looking in the right direction but only noticed the ring binding was knocked off so I looked in the wrong…

Pros
  • MADE IN USA - Manufactured in Brunton's own facility in Riverton, Wyoming.
Cons
  • There are problems

The needle is 2.5 degrees east of magnetic north.

I've compared this compass to several others and for some reason it reads 2.5 degrees east of magnetic north. I know it sounds crazy but it's true. I not only checked several other compasses, but several locations to avoid magnetic anomalies. I even asked some friends to check it out too. Now the mystery is why? It's just a magnetic needle. Some smart people still don't understand why. The rest of the design is desirable but doesn't read properly. I don't have to recommend it for that.

Pros
  • Raised reading
Cons
  • Good but not great

Broke after 4 months

Broken after 4 months of use, the liquid in the compass ran all over my pocket. I don't know if it broke because of the heat (worked in 100 degree weather for several weeks), but even before that the arrow always seemed a bit crooked. It didn't crash into anything, and I didn't throw my bag against the wall multiple times, so I have no idea how or why it's going to break. My last compass, Silva, lasted 5 years until a tree stole it while shooting. Save your money and buy a Silva, I only got…

Great compass! Accessories for outdoor sports and leisure

Cape Codder's review is incorrect. They state that declination adjustment is required between inclinometer readings; it is not true. As for the declension setting: It's a pain, I won't lie. But not enough to deduct a star in my opinion. After all, if you don't travel often for geological/geographical work, you only need to do it occasionally. If you're a geologist, geographer, or engineer, you probably have to spend over $37 (which is what I paid) for your compass. The scope level is…

Poor quality, difficult to read and adjust

With the exception of the azimuth scale, this is a well designed compass and the materials appear to be of good quality. If it works as intended I would save and use it. Unfortunately, it has three main disadvantages that make it slow and difficult to get an accurate and reliable bearing. In fact, they are so bad that I will return the compass. If you really need accurate observations, don't rely on this compass. Here are the shortcomings that led me to this opinion: - Bearings are difficult to

Pros
  • Chart magnifier
Cons
  • Mostly good, but...

The Climber Navigation Committee bought one from Revain and one from Backcountry to get two from different lots. The packaging is over the top. Keep the bandages handy to open the plastic wrap. Freeze test is good. Neither compass froze. The liquid in the case must be good. Mirror hinge - both were good, normal hinge action, not too loose and not too stiff. Bezel Rotation and Centering - The bezels are slightly loose and can rotate almost on their own. They may not stay tuned when following…

GOOD: -East/West declination correction scale is easy to understand.

GOOD: The east/west declination correction scale is easy to understand and eliminates the need to memorize adding for west and subtracting for east. I like it when aiming degrees increases right in front of my eyeball. However, the actual header and the reverse header 180 are on top of each other (it's a bit hard to explain but if you look closely at the picture you'll see what I mean). I could see it could confuse people and at worst cause someone to accidentally go in the exact opposite…
