Check for compatibility with powerful notebooks

The first docking station I received didn't work properly. Everything was connected well, but the monitor kept turning off, disconnecting from the laptop and reconnecting after 5-10 seconds. When it disconnected I got three Windows disconnect beeps and when it reconnected I got four connection beeps. Sometimes it happened by accident and sometimes when I clicked something on the screen. I contacted Cable Matters support and they let me go through the normal driver and firmware update processโ€ฆ

Great unit, if your laptop needs >85W, get a cheaper model.

This docking station is great and I would give it five stars even though it doesn't match my laptop 100%. I have a Dell XPS 15 9570 that can draw up to 130W of power. The power on this one (as clearly documented) is 85 watts. When you're not stressing the laptop it stays charged, but when you're doing something CPU intensive the battery will drain a bit and then charge back up. Doing this repeatedly is not good for the battery. Normally, when the battery is fully charged and you are connectedโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Computers and accessories
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model

This is the dock you need. Do not buy other similar brands.

There are several variants of this product: Kensington SD5000T, Kensington SD5200T and StarTech.com TB3DK2DPPD. I have tested all of these and this one has the highest build quality and no issues. Others had unreliable ports, static audio, or USB transfer issues. The Cable Matters block is perfect. Charge your MacBook Pro (2017) at full speed, connect dual monitors (with optional Thunderbolt 3 to DisplayPort/HDMI cable), connect external speakers and microphones, take advantage of additionalโ€ฆ

This is a good dock/port replicator for MacBook Pro

- update 20th October 2019 so it's been a little while since I've used this dock almost every day and it has worked flawlessly and done its job perfectly. I had a 2016 MBP when I bought this dock and after a few months I replaced it with a 2018 MBP and the dock works the same. I am very happy with this purchase. Previous Review September 2018 I purchased this Thunderbolt 3 Dock for my 2016 MacBook Pro to use with two external monitors: an HP 24" 1920 x 1200 monitor and an HP 23" 1600 x 1200โ€ฆ

Pros
  • Thunderbolt 3 Dock adds 2 USB 3.0 ports with charging capability, USB-C data port, Gigabit Ethernet network connectivity, and audio headphone and microphone ports through a single Thunderbolt 3 port added
Cons
  • factor kit
