My son is 5'6" and weighs about 100 pounds. I bought them in 12H and they fit great! he likes the hook-and-eye closure more than the button. They wash and dry beautifully and look great!

I chose the 18H which was perfect as it could adjust the waist and still had room to grow and ended up buying another pair as he likes them when he takes his bike off they still look like new

My son is a member of the NA Explorer scouting movement who wears navy blue shorts as part of their uniform. These shorts wash well (do not pill), wear well (do not rip etc. when camping or playing) and he says they are very comfortable, especially when he is putting things in his pockets. He says he can't feel a knife, compass, or snack in his pocket. Enough space to grow, so replace only once a year despite growth.
