Why did I not install a DRO on my lathe many years ago it is awesome. Soon to purchase a three axis for my Jet 9x42 milling machine

Retired engineer with a few old lathes and "bad eye sight" - that's me. At under $300, these DRO's work for me. I don't work in the environment which is sub 0.0005". For the money, it's hard to beat. I have levels which cost more then this 20 years ago. You have to understand how to "tram" these things in to get you accuracy. It's a very good product with a terrible manual. The Y scale factor was trashed and not resettable after a linear cal (probably operator error). It took 6 emails to learn how to do a master clear, which isn't in the manual. So here is how: After startup, long press "8". Scroll up/down arrows until "ALL CLR". ENTER Then enter "2000" for password and ENTER.

I needed a readout for my Bridgeport mill in my home business shop. The features and performance are great for the price. Resolution can be changed from 5 to 3 places and there is a bolt circle function, trig functions, calculator functions as well as angle finding. Error calibration is easily programmed via the instructions. First they came in missing parts then busted and by week 8 they finally got something to me I could use. They are a pain to use and never reread to a point I would trust them.

Seems to work fine on a Sharp mill 1000mm x 400mm scales. The control head manual is pretty good, covers all machines it can be used on.The scales come with no drawings or instructions. Plenty of parts are supplied, but I couldn't use them. So measure everything closely and make your own drawings before starting. I got both X & Y scales within a 0.003" Z and its axis of travel. Hope that is ok, no specs. There was 0.005 bow in the the 1000mm housing so I set the ends with shims and adjustments.

Unfortunately I ordered the wrong size and had to return it. It looked good and when I get a chance I will call the supplier and find out the correct size and order it.

Item arrived in a box that had bubble wrap on the outside. One glass did not work out of the box. Terrible quality. Not worth the effort to replace because it looks cheap and I doubt it will hold up.

I love this thing. I need to order one for my mill. I had to fab brackets the ones that came with it might work for some installs but not mine.

As a very specific niche device, it is assumed that the purchaser has good mechanical and machinist capabilities and understanding of the glass scale requirements. Other than online videos, there are no written installation instructions. The alignment and indicating needed to mount the scales accurately with no runout should be stressed more. If this is done carefully, the device works well and has checked out quite accurate against gage standards.
