We have a storm drain at the back of our property that has fairly large holes in the top grate to drain excess groundwater. Well we've had a couple of baby pits that fell down and wouldn't come out without a couple of neighbors taking down a very heavy trellis and rescuing them. I bought this rug because of the thickness on one side. I built a new deck and the step from the deck to my enclosed porch was about 1/2 to 1 inch lower than what I had before. This mat is 1/2" thick. It appears to be of good quality. The holes are a decent size to prevent dirt from building up on the mat. Actually I wasn't sure which side was up and which side was below. I live in an area with red clay/sand and it sticks to the soles of my shoes and leads to my house. Bristle rugs clog in a few days, so this rug is great for stomping and kicking dirt and falling into big holes. Now I can go a couple of 2-3 weeks before having to lift the mat and sweep away debris.
