Description of 🚵 Garmin Edge 830 Mountain Bike Bundle: Touchscreen GPS Cycling Computer with Performance Monitoring, Mapping, and Popularity Routing

Performance GPS cycling computer with mapping and touchscreen. Dynamic performance monitoring provides insights on your VO2 max, recovery, training load focus, heat and altitude acclimation, nutrition, hydration and more when paired with compatible sensors. MTB dynamics track jump count, jump distance and hang time as well as Grit, a measure of the ride’s difficulty, and Flow, which tracks the smoothness of your descent so you have a score to beat next time. Cycling safety features include new bike alarm, group messaging and tracking, assistance and compatibility with Varia rearview radar and lights so you can see and be seen (when device is paired with your compatible smartphone). Includes routable Garmin Cycle Map with popularity routing — which helps you ride like a local — plus on-device route creation, off-course recalculation and back to start; integrated Trail forks data includes trail difficulty ratings. Customize with free apps widgets and data fields from the Connect IQ Store. Battery life: up to 20 hours with GPS; works with Garmin Charge power pack for up to 40 hours of additional battery life

This is a mountain bike kit purchased for use with mountain bikes. The screen is capacitive, so it doesn't work reliably with most full finger gloves (which most mountain bike riders use). In rain heavy enough to collect drips, the screen suffers from phantom touch events, making it even more difficult to use (you can lock it so it doesn't at least mess things up, but then you can unlock the screen no longer switch to look at the map). To top it off, Trail Forks maps cannot be reliably…

Don't buy it for MTB navigation!

The unit works as intended by Garmin tech support but I have to tell you, if you are trying to learn a new trail system, do NOT expect to use it and expect that it gives you a chance behind the course / accompaniment along the intended route. The screen jumps and spins while driving and it just can't keep up. It will redirect you and you will end up picking up your phone. The device tracks your actions well, but it's not fast enough, not clear enough, not precise enough to tell you where to go.

Pros
  • Few competitors
Cons
  • I vaguely remember

I love having this on my travels.

Once you learn how to use it, you will love it. You can customize screens with more or less information. I have distance, timer, speed, elapsed time, average speed, top speed, elevation gain, total ascent and total descent all on one screen. I like to see what level I'm rising or falling at. these seem to be relatively good estimates for the trips I take. It also tracks jumps with statistics. I'm sure it's really exciting for the people who have 50 foot jumps and times in multiples of seconds…

Stops working after 2 weeks.

So, the features themselves were great when they worked but unfortunately they stopped working after only 2 rides. One thing I didn't like was that the maps had to be connected to a phone and my phone couldn't connect because Garmin was hacked at the time so half the functions didn't work. I was expecting it to be a standalone device, independent of the phone.

Pros
  • Mountain Bike Dynamics measures jump count, jump distance, and hang time, as well as Endurance, a measure of riding difficulty, and Flow, which tracks the smoothness of your descent so you have a score to beat next time
Cons
  • I remember me vague

The device works according to Garmin's technical support project but I have to tell you, DO NOT expect to use it if you explore something new trail. system and expect it to give you turn-by-turn directions/guidance on your planned route.
