General Tool 87 NOT!

Still works. That being said, this isn't a GT 87 model at 8.6 inches long. It's only 5 3/4 inches. Not the end of the world, but what really worries me is that it's being listed and sold as something it isn't. Not worth getting a refund so I had to buy from a local seller to make sure I got what I paid for.

i must be bad

Over the years I have used both larger and thinner automatic dies like this one. This one wasn't very good - I don't know if it was just me or if this particular design had issues. The adjustment screw on top was useless for what it was supposed to do, both accuracy and consistency. Eventually, after not using it that much, I threw it away.

Pros
  • Best in its niche
Cons
  • Expandable

Works better as a scriber than a hole punch

Looks nice and compact but doesn't work very well, few uses. I've tried setting it up many times to be up and running, but it never stays set on command. It has become quite loose so the adjustment is temporary and will never be used once removed from my pocket or tool bag. Ball end that fills your palm.

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • Updates

Works but definitely not a direct replacement for the old USA made dies

Works but does not replace my old Made in USA model. This is thicker and cheaper in the hand. I took apart my old one along with the new one and you can see there are some internal differences. In the photo, shiny is the new model and brushed aluminum is the old. This one works, but it's definitely not the quality of my old one I was hoping to replace.

Pros
  • Pretty packaging
Cons
  • Pretty good

Good performance, excellent quality.

Performance is good. There are probably a few more expensive models that can be a bit more accurate, but I personally don't use them for precision work. If there is a difference between this and other potentially more expensive/exclusive brands, I don't think it would be big enough to justify a much higher price tag. For the price, the performance is great, and the portability makes it something you can always have on hand should you need it. Very durable and feels high quality too. Good value…

It worked exactly once.

I should have known better than to order one of the cheapest centralizers I could find. After taking the die out of the box I made a trial die just to make sure it worked without any problems. It worked for the first shot, albeit a slight one. It wasn't until about a week later that I used the punch again, and this time it didn't do anything no matter how I adjusted it or how hard I pressed the punch. Do yourself a favor and buy a Starret Auto Centralizer. which Revain listed. This will give…

Handy little centering basket

Very nice little automatic centering basket. It's more likely to be carried in my pocket and is perfect for the smaller, softer materials (polycarbonate, styrene, brass, etc.) I usually work with. I have two full size automatic punches, but they are too big to carry around and tend to break plastic parts. This works fine. The replaceable tip has a standard 1/8 inch diameter. From old bars I make extra tips for cutting millstones - I grind a small groove, add a coil of spring wire and make my…

Pros
  • GOLS certified
Cons
  • Functionality

Just NOT the same! I have a #87 that is over 30 years old. I just wore it out, so I bought a replacement. always for the better. The "new" #87 is significantly thicker (especially in the hand), clunky, inferior and imprecise. The load spring of the new one pushes too hard, so the impression is too deep and distorted. "USA" is in several places and the new one is a piece of China shit. At least I didn't buy anything new, or at least I didn't see it in my eyes. MF

Pros
  • Great for outdoor activities
