Chrome plated lightweight plastic push lever.

I bought this to replace a Hamilton Beach can opener that I have had for over 10 years. The only reason I replaced is because the white lever turned yellow with age after years of use and still worked great. They really saved on this new model. The lever handle is cheap chrome plated plastic. Folds out for easy cleaning. I'm keeping it, but I want it to be done the way it was many years ago.

Pros
  • There's something in there
Cons
  • No instructions

Weak, weak, incredibly inefficient

I have to say - I'm shocked. It just arrived today. I was so thrilled that I finally replaced my old and complicated electric opener with the new Hamilton Beach. I was dying to try it, so right out of the box I pocketed it and grabbed a regular sized can of pumpkin. Not only did it NOT latch, it didn't even try to turn over. That was incredible! I'm so upset about this. I would be better off with a traditional PDA! I want my money back.

Pros
  • Great for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging

Exactly what I was looking for.

This can opener is exactly what I was looking for. I needed a replacement for my 10 year old can opener. After reading the reviews I decided on this one. I am happy with my choice. It's not too loud when opening cans. With most standard sized glasses, I can leave the glass and walk away while it does its thing. When I open a large jar of sauce I do put my hand under it as a precaution, but even with these jars it does a good job. A great can opener for the price.

Pros
  • Free for educational purposes
Cons
  • Definitely bad product

VERY useful: Can Opener

I injured my wrist and couldn't easily use my manual can opener. Hamilton Beach saved me a lot of pain. pierce the top of the glass. You simply prick the glass and remove your hand from the "control cap". It automatically moves across the top and turns off when the can is fully open. The magnet will hold the top until you remove it. The lace/lace is detachable so you can wash it in hot water. This would be very helpful for the elderly with arthritis or any kind of stiffness. Works as expected for the kitchen and dining room

I've tried this with several different sized cans (from traditional to canned Costco chicken) and this can opener works with all of them with no problems. The magnet is strong so the lid won't fall on the counter and make a mess, and the jar seals well to avoid the same problem. I haven't tried a rear knife sharpener yet, but I didn't buy it for that either. (didn't know it existed!) Haven't had it for a very long time but so far so good. If there are any reuse issues I will update the reviewโ€ฆ

NOT heavy suitable for kitchen utensils and gadgets

The item description says "heavy" can opener. No, that is not so! And the box says nothing about it - the description is misleading. In fact, it's all plastic save for the blade and a few other tiny parts, and weighs about half what my old Cuisinart Die Cast can opener weighed. (Why do companies make an amazing product for a while and then just stop? That old Cuisinart was a workhorse and a beautiful thing that lasted *many* years - until one of the few plastic parts just died.) If you want aโ€ฆ
