Description of HitchSafe HS7000T HS7000 Key Vault

SECURE YOUR VALUABLES - Enjoy outdoor activities without thinking of losing your keys, cards or valuables. This secure key vault inconspicuously allows you to keep your valuables secure at all times during outdoor activities where that might usually be a hassle. HIGH IMPACT ALUMINUM - The Hitch receiver is constructed from high impact aluminum and is a vault that combined with the HitchSafe provides the most secure location on your vehicle to store spare keys and other personal items. NO TOOLS REQUIRED - The HitchSafe easily installs and uninstalls in seconds with no tools required. To access your valuables you simply release the rubber dust cover that looks like any normal hitch cover, enter in your personal 4 number dial combination, which releases the drawer and allows you access to your valuables. SAFE AND SOUND - The HitchSafe is far superior to the magnetic key holders that fall off at the first bump. The HitchSafe is contained within the solid steel structure of the Hitch Receiver with a combination that only you know. NOTE - The 2005+ Toyota Tacoma’s and the 2007+ Toyota Tundra’s OEM Hitch Receivers require optional longer pins. The HitchSafe fits all other makes and models to include RV’s, all OEM and all aftermarket hitch receivers. NOTE: If you have a hitch larger than 2" you will need HitchSafe HS7021T.

Great concept, bad design.

I'm a big fan of these and have been using them for years with no problems. However, the latter seems to have had its problems. Combo numbers get stuck all the time, and the deadbolt has broken off, rendering the lock unusable.

  • Delivery was very fast

Key Locker for my Wrangler

So happy I finally pulled the trigger and installed it on my 2015 Jeep Wrangler. I've always been afraid to hide my keys in the car while surfing the web. No longer! This is perfect if you already have a tow bar installed and want to lock your keys while surfing, hiking etc, especially for the Wrangler as it's so easy to crack with the top on!

Cons
  • Interchangeable

Make sure the holes in the HitchSafe line up with the holes in the receiver.

I think I would have liked it to match my hitch receiver. The pinholes on the HitchSafe are a full ½ inch shorter than the hole on my receiver. I contacted HitchSafe and they emailed me how to change it YOURSELF. YES, REALLY?! sent it back and if they get smarter and do the adjustment themselves to maintain the warranty I'll check again.

Pros
  • Hands-free operation
Cons
  • Hard to say

CHOOSE YOUR COMBINATION BEFORE TOUCHING THE ADJUSTING SCREW

Excellent article/invention. No more key boxes under the bumper. Be very careful when setting the initial combination. SET THE SELECTED COMBINATION BEFORE TOUCHING THE ADJUSTING SCREW. You only get one chance to get it right. I didn't and ended up having to disassemble the lock and align the tumblers by hand. Quite a learning experience. You can do it, but it's much easier to follow the instructions.

Pros
  • Very good value for money
Cons
  • Quality

You won't be happy if it doesn't open.

Well after 6 years I am very dissatisfied with HitchSafe. It's been a few years since I've had a reason to remove the tray and today I had a really hard time getting the storage out of my trunk. There was no problem with the combination, and the latch worked perfectly - the problem is that dust and moisture "glued" the compartment to the safe body and the springs on the back of the safe rusted. The real problem is that it was so secure that I thought it was a mechanical issue because it wasn't…

Pros
  • Robust design
Cons
  • Everything OK

Hitting a (tiny) dead horse.

Others have complained here and I haven't noticed YET. If you have a newer Tacoma or Tundra you will need to purchase this product AND a set of longer screws for $9. All in all, not a big deal, but what annoys me more is that it wasn't an option when I originally bought it. Why can't I buy a safety tow hitch (that's an absolutely amazing concept and these guys got it pretty much right) that actually works for my truck without an additional purchase? Or maybe buy back my tiny (I'm guessing here)

Pros
  • Pleasant to use
Cons
  • Not sure

I recommend attaching the leash to the rubber cover

This is the second safe I have purchased. The first worked great. I live in a drier climate in NORCAL. Not really rust that could ruin or destroy the device. However, a little lubrication or cleaning may be needed from time to time. I drive a jeep a lot and it often sank in the red clay water, went a bit wild and got stuck in the mud. I recommend attaching the leash to the rubber cover. a small hole with a braided wire that connects to another hole on the hitch at the rear under the bumper, so…

Pros
  • Free for educational use
Cons
  • Upgrade available

Do you have Tacoma or Tundra? Or the new 4Runner?

The storage space in the safe is small, but this product is still very smart, theoretically easy to install and works well (depending on the design/shape of your 2" receiver). If you have a Toyota Tacoma (I had a 2019) or Tundra it will NOT work out of the box as the supplied screws are too short. So you MUST purchase other, longer screws from HitchSafe (which cost around $10 and don't even come with foam washers!). The longer screws you need are part of #HS7021T. I personally find it insulting

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Quick start guide
