QA is pretty bad: HDD enclosure

The tray locking mechanism is simply a piece of plastic that flexes to release the locking plate. The latch that holds the pin in the latch is a protrusion in the bottom of this plastic latch. The latch on one of my trays was almost flat making it impossible to hold the bar in the closed position. Exchange was not possible (only return), so I repaired the retainer myself with thermoplastic. If it comes loose again, I'll probably have to 3D print a new ABS latch. When I do I will update thisโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.

ICY DOCK is the ICY COOL drive bay.

Bought a year ago and just managed to fit it into the Corsair 540 case Insert directly into the front 5.25 drive bay. I now have access to all of my photo, movie and music backup drives. It was easy to set up and connect. has a built-in fan that cools the drives. Mounting screws were required as these disappeared from my gearbox a year later. (very unremarkable flatheads. Wrote a quick email to ICY DOCK customer service and they were sent out the same day. N/C. This is my third ICY DOCK driveโ€ฆ

Solid regular sled mounting system

I bought a pair of these for my home server because I was tired of reaching under a table and using a screwdriver at an awkward angle to swap drives. It wasn't easy fitting two of these units into my ATX case, but with some encouragement they both fit into the four available 5.25" bays. The fans aren't silent, but they're nowhere near as loud as rackmount server fans. The side case is very handy for working 24/7 in my small apartment. I tested the fans via NA-SRC7 low noise adapters but foundโ€ฆ

Great product with one tiny potential flaw

I just installed this drive cage in my server to hide another hard drive in the enclosure before having to resort to an external enclosure. This product is very well built and fairly easy to install. All screws come with the cage, are packaged separately and are even labeled so you don't get the wrong ones. The included fan is quiet and I love that it has built-in LEDs for each drive. It installed on my system right away, with one small downside. It uses two standard SATA power connectors, butโ€ฆ

Pros
  • I've always loved it
Cons
  • Infinitely sluggish

I just installed my new 3-in-2 Icy Dock FatCage and wanted to see how well it could cool drives. I installed 3 hard drives in it, a couple of more powerful Western Digital (WD) 7200 rpm hard drives. and a lower speed WD 5400 rpm drive. My computer case is the worst case for this FatCage. In my case, it's the Nanoxia Deep Silence 1 Rev B, which has a swinging door just in front of the 5 1/4 drive bays that completely blocks any air coming in and (presumably on purpose) any sound escaping thatโ€ฆ
